Community documentary, family archives and film, made with the people in them.
I am a British and German documentary photographer and filmmaker based in London. Since 2020 I have worked with communities in Armenia, Kosovo and India: photographing over repeated visits, filming with local crews, and building family archives that stay with the families. I work with organisations that need these stories told with care, for reports, appeals, exhibitions, education and their own records.
Four ways to work together
Community documentaryPhotographs and short films made with a community over repeated visits, not in a single shoot. Built for reports, appeals, exhibitions and websites, with the people in them consenting at every step.
Family and community archivesScanning family albums at the kitchen table, fronts and backs, with each family deciding what is shared. The archive goes back to the community. A method for heritage, diaspora and memory projects.
Participatory workshopsPhotography with children and young people: cyanotype in the field, instant cameras in the classroom. They choose what to show. Suited to education, child-protection and youth programmes.
Screenings and talksA film followed by a conversation with the director, for boards, donors, staff days, universities and diaspora events. In person or online.Organisations that put people first

The method
Consent first
Nothing is published without the agreement of the people in it. Places are shown only as a region where safety requires it. Pictures come down on request.
Local crews, paid fairly
Fixers, translators and crews from the community, paid at a fair rate. The story is told with them, not about them.
Slow and repeated
Four visits to one village, not one. Trust comes on the second visit, when the albums come out.
Neutral and factual
People first. The work records what people live through and what they say, without taking sides.
